KOREAN NAME: 배혜정 도가 생 막걸리
REVIEW: After a terrible experience with Bae Hyejeong Doga (BHD) Ssal Makgeolli (read my review here), I have been a bit gun-shy about trying other BHD products. But BHD Saeng is a makgeolli you’re likely to come across if you shop at the big “mart” stores, so I got up my courage and bought a bottle.
To be fair, BHD Saeng is an improvement compared to BHD Ssal. It’s not overly sweet for an aspartame makgeolli and it has more of an interesting mouthfeel due to being unpasteurized. However, I still wouldn’t recommend it. While they may have found a way to downplay the sweetness, the aspartame still has that characteristic chemical zing. When you pair this with an off-putting bitterness and an uncanny bubblegum scent, BHD Saeng sort of reminded me of a wad of Bazooka Joe that you’ve been chewing on too long.
Body: Medium thick.
Smell: BHD Saeng has a fruity, almost banana or bubblegum, scent.
BREWERY: Bae Hyejeong Doga, or BHD (배혜정 도가)
On a side note, BHD has one of the nicest and easiest to use English-language sites of any makgeolli producer out there.
